GLIMPSES OF THE PROCESS
GearX was named Gearguru when they first approached me. The initial explorations all feature this name, while the later designs reflect the change as the brand wanted to emphasize its AI-powered expertise in the domains of outdoor sports, photography and musical gear.
DISCOVERY AND VISUAL LANDSCAPE STUDY
I put together a deck analysing the visual identities of 5 competitor brands, 3 aspirational brands and 2 case study brands. This was followed by developing 3 distinct colour palette options for Gearguru.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Sketching, presenting, refining, rethinking the concept once the brand has been renamed, nitpicking for fonts, you know the drill.
REFLECTIONS
As a musician myself, the idea of a digital marketplace for musical instruments founded on the values of trust and reliability excited me. Alongside gear for passionate individuals, GearX also aims to provide expert guidance based on the customer's needs, and it was a fun challenge to translate these qualities and ambitions into a visual identity. This was also the first time I developed such a comprehensive guidebook to define usage and styles for icons, illustrations and photographs for the brand. I love systems of constraints within which one can express creativity, so I poured myself into this process outlining one myself.
But the best part was getting to pulverize the logo in multiple horrendous ways for incorrect examples, hands down. RIP.
