KAANCH

Film • Short Fiction • 15 mins • Hindi • Mother and Daughter • Working Women

Kaanch is the story of the bond that a working woman and her young child share, and the invisible causes of injuries they endure. Combined with work-family-conflict and the glass ceiling in her corporate job, an accident at home makes Sarva question her roles as a caring mother and a successful professional. At the end of the day, her reassurance comes through Ani, her daughter’s loving gesture.

Kaanch is a reflection of my own childhood with my mother, who is a teacher. In this film, I explore the potent visual and poetic metaphors associated with glass: invisibility, fragility, and introspection. Through a personal story, I seek to highlight the universality of the glass ceiling in the professional world, and the stress of work-family-conflict (WFC) which impacts women. Addressing UN SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, I hope to question society’s undue perception of a working mother as ‘neglectful’ and ‘self-centred’ by portraying the demanding reality of her circumstances. This film is an ode to her strength and resilience in both roles.

Shoot order spreadsheets, location recce images, lighting plan diagrams, elaborate storyboards — I'm just as proud of them as the film. Here are some behind-the-scenes and glimpses of the process of making Kaanch.

PRODUCTION STILLS

REFLECTIONS

Making my first short fitcion film was both challenging and deeply rewarding. Throughout, it tested my ability to hold the creative vision for the film together while navigating real-world constraints, such shooting in a bustling market amid constant unpredictability. Every moment of preproduction required careful planning and organisation, while production demanded quick thinking, improvisation, and flawless coordination with the crew and larger team, and postproduction took unforeseen amounts of creativity and tenacity in working with the inevitable little ways the raw material for the edit differs from the initial script.

Working with actors honed my communication skills further; I learnt how to guide performances toward authenticity, and how to create a space of trust and openness on set, especially with a child protagonist. Managing so many variables at once, from the logistical and technical to the emotional, pushed me to strengthen my resilience, flexibility, and leadership skills. Navigating bureaucracy, institutional constraints and remaining flexible in the face of unfolding on-ground conditions sharpened my directorial instincts and renewed my passion for collaborative storytelling. The lessons I took from Kaanch would go on to shape all my future projects. Looking back, this film gave me the fortitude for the larger, more ambitious projects I've worked on since.
