Old Books: A Time Capsule of the Metropolis
Film • Short Documentary • Urban chronicling • Second-hand Bookshop • Grant
The ever-changing can be measured by something that doesn’t change; a quiet little old-book shop tucked away in Bangalore lets the bustling, chaotic city peek in and take a moment to read itself.
Since childhood, this Old Books shop has been my favourite space in the city. As my taste grew over the years from The Famous Five to young adult fiction-fantasy to non-fiction, it was a constant go-to for reading and buying second-hand books.
This film explorse the story of this quaint, tiny shop and its owner, Gnanashekhar,
who is as knowledgeable about the books he collects as he is excited to invite new and regular customers into his world of literary treasures.
Every time I travel away from Bangalore and return to the city, I feel dread in the pit of my stomach, fearing as I walk down this road, that it might have vanished- as so many spaces with a history and personal memory attached to them have a tendency to. But Old Books has always remained, sandwiched and steadfast, amidst the ever-changing vertical urban landscape.
In the steadily burgeoning metropolis, with its many cyber cafes and corporate offices, this shop is a time-capsule: a space reserved exclusively for a moment of repose for readers, and a rare refuge for bibliophiles who love the smell of yellowed pages. By tracing its origins, growth, and continuing legacy, the film cherishes this shop as a Proustian keeper of the city’s collective memory with its quiet, magnetic presence.
