msinimefoce: Reverse the Crisis

Film • Experimental Short • 2 mins • Ecofeminism • UN SDG 12

How often do we see men carrying pots of water? How often do we think of women when we think of farmers?

This film is an experimental reflection on how our current developmental models of extractive patriarchal capitalism feed on the combined overexploitation of nature and women. It draws upon creation myths and fever dreams, and is layered with references to the nurturing hands of nature and female farmers, the debilitating consequences of the advent of genetically modified seeds in India, the Chipko movement, and the water scarcity crisis around the globe. It addresses the connection between Ecofeminism and the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production. The sound design echoes this unsustainable idea of growth and the rising urgency. The film treats curiosity as a call to action, the reversed narrative urging the viewers to play the video in reverse to understand its message and act upon it.

GLIMPSES OF THE PROCESS

Our subject for the first self-led semester project was the Sustainable Development Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production. Through my research, I developed an concept for the film that leaned into an ecofeminist perspective and a fever dream-like treatment.
